HIV/AIDS research, FIOCRUZ

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2025-present

Research Question: How do HIV/AIDS treatment approaches at FIOCRUZ compare with those used in Brazil and globally, and how do these differences influence patient outcomes and HIV-associated malignancies such as Kaposi sarcoma?

This project combines on-site research at FIOCRUZ with ongoing analysis from New York. Using a comparative, literature-based approach, I analyze clinical studies, public health data, and treatment protocols from FIOCRUZ alongside national and international HIV/AIDS guidelines.

My work examines differences in antiretroviral therapy strategies, timing of treatment initiation, and immune recovery to better understand how clinical and systemic factors influence disease progression and cancer risk in HIV-positive populations.

This research remains ongoing and continues to shape the questions I’m asking about how HIV care varies across health systems and why those differences matter for patients. I will conclude the project in the spring, when I present my findings at the Marymount School of New York Independent Science Research Forum.
